Practice Tips
Practice makes…
Play slowly
Evaluate your playing
Rhythm first
Focus on the problem
Expect your best
Correctly play 5 times in a row
Take a break when frustrated
Remember…practicing your instrument is your homework for this class. Treat it as such. You should practice at least 5 days a week.
1. Set up a routine. This means a consistent practice time.
2. Find a quiet place to practice, free of distractions.
3. Plan what you’d like to accomplish.
4. Know the difference between playing and practicing! Playing through an entire piece is a waste of time.
5. Fill out your practice calendar.
6. Set up a reward system with your parents (weekly or monthly).
7. Be patient. Everyone has trouble doing some things.
Typical 30 Minute Practice Session:
4 minutes of warming up – scales, long tones, bowings, vibrato
22 minutes of practicing – set goals and work hard
4 minutes of playing – something fun or maybe play what you just practiced as a good conclusion
